The weakest link of the AR-15 weapon system
is often the magazine. They are made of lightweight aluminum and will not stand up to the
abuse of a steel magazine. The springs can become weak, the
feed lips damaged, and the follower can get cocked. The most
reliable system that I have found (for a reasonable price) is the USGI mag made by D&H Industries. These are the same
magazines as Bushmaster's, but with a different floorplate.
They are Teflon coated inside and out. The green followers
work fine, but I also install the
Generation II Magpul enhanced self-leveling follower featuring
their patent pending 4 way anti-tilt design with Teflon additive.
One more bit of advice - load all of your magazines with 28
rounds. The pressure of the magazine spring will exert
enough pressure on the follower against a closed bolt to prevent
the magazine from seating properly.
